Constructivist Totems
The Constructivist Totems series generates a sharp formality in reference to the eponymous aesthetic movement. Saturated planes of red and black cut across the viewing field. The geometric surfaces suggest a trajectory and a velocity, captured in an instant by the brass rod that pierces their core. The Totem series, from which these pieces developed, emphasized the sensation of flight, motion, and fluidity. The I-Ching totem (1996) expanded on this with a translation from naturalistic to geometric arrangements representing hexagrams.
The I-Ching, book of changes, tells of finding presence in a field in motion, succinct moments encoded in broken and unbroken lines.
